Piece 10

Intention:

I wanted to go back to depicting the environment where the other scenes take place in. When visiting the Alice Neel exhibition at the Barbican I saw a glass walled office building. Here is the photo I took of it. I liked the symmetry of the lights and their echoing reflections and also the irregularity of the blinds. I cropped it into a strip, as I thought it would fit well with the straight stripe background. However, I was not pleased with the image as within the office not a lot was going on and I wanted the lighting to be more dramatic. Searching through stock photos of offices i found these two images

Process:

Used the same process to create the canvas and to attach it to the MDF. I chose a square piece to work on as I thought it would create more variation within the arrangement. The only thing different about this process is I did paint a white base layer to ensure the stripes were not visible. Then I drew on the design with pencil, I did make some changes from the stock photo I was working from by having less definition and having one clear figure. By having the solitude figure I think I was going for how you can feel isolated and alone at work when you are supposedly a team and this can be design from the company, with incentive to increase productivity of the labour but instead resulting lower satisfaction of the employee which could lead to them not putting as much effort in or leaving. For this painting I was working on quite a small scale again and was not very precise with my brushwork for the office interiors and instead focused the details on the man in the window, but I did again struggle with the control over my paint brush for the small details of the hands so they do somewhat resemble lobster claws.

Evaluation:

After completing this piece I did feel I covered all the areas I could explore under this theme. I am pleased with the end result. I like the fuzziness of the interior being not quite clear what to make out yet still being recognisable, I like the simplicity of having just a single man in the window. My downfall for this painting could be the precision of my line work for the window outlines. I did use tape but in some areas it bled under but I think this adds to the fuzziness so I think it's a pleasant mistake.
