Continuing drawing inspiration from Benjamin BJorklund I wanted to try out a floating head piece. This was an experimental test as well to test out making my paint thicker, using tape, scraping and dry brushing. I used Water soluble oil paint on cartridge paper, which from past experience I thought would help dry out the paint quicker meaning I could create more layers on a smooth surface, I did work in drying out the paint but also leading to it pilling which created an uneven difficult surface.

What I learnt:
I am thankful I did this test piece on paper as I was able to take more risks without having to worry about using up materials and it helped me come to decisions. For an example, I will not be smudging or dragging mar brush across the piece to try and blur it like in the painting, I find it to be to unpredictable and the end result not worth it. I do like the clean cut off created from using the tape which is a similar process I used in the previous painting. Overall, For next pieces I do not think I will try any experimental painting techniques but I may continue the monochrome colour palette as I do enjoy the simplicity and it adds to the theme of lack of individuality.

Piece 5:

Originally I got the idea for the red telephone from the game show Deal or No deal, where the phone holds so much power and weight over the contestant and ultimately they call taken on the phone decides whether they win or lose. This lead to me gathering stock photos of red dial up phones and I think I chose this image was the black reflection in the phone which added to the contrast and drama of the object.

The Process and Evaluation:

The same with previous painting I prepped the shirt fabric with clear gesso and applied two layers, like in previous ones it created a grey cast and was more noticeable because of the fabric being darker. Once it dried it had a dusty appearance which is not what I wanted. For the painting process, I struggled to create a smooth plastic appearance for the phone but I am pleased with the end result. During the process I decided to take away the numbers from the dial, I am pleased with this decision as it makes it feel more static and invites the viewer to question. Once I finished painting and reviewed it I felt like the phone looked like a sticker on the background and lacked depth, to combat this I decided to make the background darker with a wash of purple. This was a mistake, the piece become over saturated with warm tones and ones the background dried it created an uneven surface - I could of correcting the by re-stretching the canvas but I felt I could no longer work on the piece as I wasn't drawing value from it.
